Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 23, 2026  |  Last updated: May 23, 2026

Return is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy outlines how the Return mobile application handles data, demonstrating our commitment to a calm, secure, and local-first user experience.

1. Overview

Return (the "App") is developed by Morgan Canteri ("we," "our," or "us"). Return is a quiet curiosity app designed to let you save thoughts, links, and topics you want to explore later. We believe your curiosity is personal. Therefore, Return is designed to be local-first. We do not require you to create an account, we do not sell your personal data, and we do not use advertising tracking networks.

2. Information You Provide

Because Return operates without account registration, we do not collect typical identifiers like your name, phone number, password, or physical address. The information you provide inside the App is limited to:

  • Topics, questions, thoughts, or ideas you save to your Shelf.
  • Web links (URLs) or text clips you share into Return via the iOS Share Sheet.
  • Voice dictation inputs when you choose to use the microphone feature to record a topic.
  • Your selected interface language (English, French, or Spanish).

3. Information Stored on Your Device

Return is designed to store your data locally on your device. The topics you save to your Shelf are kept in local on-device storage. They are not backed up or automatically synced to our remote servers. If you delete a topic from your Shelf, it is permanently and immediately deleted from your device.

4. Information Processed when You Use Explore

Return does not auto-generate content when a topic is saved. Instead, generation only occurs when you explicitly tap the "Explore" button on a saved topic to create a structured reading guide. When you choose to use this feature, the topic text, a temporary random topic identifier, and your selected language preference are securely sent to our backend to generate the reading. This transmission is necessary to generate the personalized summary and layout you requested.

5. Shared Links and Imported Content

When you choose to share an external web link (URL) or text clip into Return using the iOS Share Sheet, the shared URL or text may be sent to our backend worker. This processing is performed strictly to extract a cleaner, tidier topic title and summary from the target website or raw text. This data is handled ephemerally and is not permanently saved or linked to you.

6. Voice Dictation and Speech Recognition

If you choose to input a topic using voice dictation, the App requests permission to access your iOS device microphone and speech recognition capabilities. These processes are entirely handled by native iOS speech-to-text libraries. Return does not capture, store, or transmit your audio voice recordings to our servers; only the resulting plain-text transcription is saved in your local Shelf.

7. Notifications

Return supports quiet, randomized notifications designed to gently resurface saved topics from your Shelf. These notifications are completely local. Return does not use a remote push notification server to contact your device. All notification triggers and schedules are managed strictly by iOS on your local hardware.

8. Third-Party Services

To provide high-quality generation, we utilize select technical partners:

  • Cloudflare Workers: Our app backend operates on Cloudflare's serverless infrastructure, which receives your "Explore" and "Share Sheet" requests, processes them, and returns the result securely.
  • AI Generation Providers: When you use "Explore," our backend worker may forward the generation query to a trusted third-party AI provider, such as DeepSeek, to compose your reading guide. No account details or persistent identifiers are shared with the AI provider.

9. Analytics and Advertising

We believe in distraction-free curiosity. Return does not sell your personal data, nor does it share, rent, or lease your content to advertising networks or third-party brokers. We do not implement third-party analytics SDKs, cookies, or advertisement tracker libraries in our app or on our website.

10. Data Retention

Because your topics are stored locally, they remain on your device for as long as the App is installed, or until you choose to delete them. For online transactions (using "Explore" or extracting shared links), the text queries are processed ephemerally on our Cloudflare backend worker and are not permanently archived or stored.

11. Children’s Privacy

Return is not designed or intended to collect information from children. Because we do not require account registration or collect identifying personal details, we do not knowingly request or gather personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has submitted a topic to our backend, please contact us.

12. International Processing

Because the backend utilizes global cloud infrastructure provided by Cloudflare and AI providers, information sent when tapping "Explore" or sharing links may be processed in regions outside of your home country (including the United States or other global data center hubs). By using these interactive features, you acknowledge this international transfer and ephemeral processing.

13. Your Choices

You maintain full control over your data in Return:

  • Microphone & Dictation: You can grant, deny, or revoke microphone and speech recognition permissions at any time via your iOS Settings.
  • Notifications: You can toggle or disable notifications inside Return's settings or via iOS Settings.
  • Data Deletion: You can clear your entire Shelf by deleting individual items or uninstalling the App from your device.

14. European Union (EEA) and UK Rights (GDPR)

If you reside in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, you are protected by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK Data Protection Act. Morgan Canteri acts as the Data Controller for processing details:

  • Legal Basis for Processing: We process interactive "Explore" summaries and "Share Sheet" link extractions on the basis of Contractual Necessity to perform the services you request. Local speech dictation and local notifications are processed entirely on the basis of your Consent when enabling these permissions on iOS.
  • Your GDPR Rights: You have the right to access, object to, restrict, rectify, or request the erasure of your personal data. Because Return is local-first, you can directly execute your rights to rectify or erase your saved shelf data on your device at any time by clearing your Shelf or deleting the App. For ephemeral backend transmissions, your query data is not associated with an account and is deleted ephemerally upon request fulfillment.
  • Right to Complain: You have the right to lodge a complaint with a European Data Protection Authority / Supervisory Authority in your country of residence if you believe your data has been handled in violation of GDPR.

15. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information.
